Science

Intent-At Shaw Hill we adapt the science curriculum to meet the children’s needs. Science is about children developing a sense of enquiry and extending their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Our aims are to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. To develop the children’s understanding of nature, processes, methods of science and the uses and implications of science. All topics are planned to include real life applications of the science being learnt. We use a range of teaching methods in science lessons, with an emphasis on providing a curriculum which develops and extends the children’s scientific concepts and enables them to be curious about the world. This will lead to children learning to work scientifically and Science lessons that focus on subject knowledge as well as investigative skills.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage all subjects are taught in a cross curricular way. Science is taught in relation to ‘Understanding of the World’. Children are encouraged to practically explore, question and develop an understanding of basic physical and life processes.

Implementation-Science is taught in a progressive topic blocks with each Year groups topics building on the children’s previous knowledge. Activities are planned to cover the relevant key scientific skills and sequence of knowledge and concepts for each year group, with particular importance placed on children working practically so that they can make discoveries for themselves. Children complete at least 1 Science investigation per topic, with an emphasis on assessing particular Science investigational skills. They are encouraged to be creative in their thinking and develop their own scientific enquiry and questioning skills.  This develops their proficiency in selecting and using scientific equipment and their confidence in drawing conclusions based on their own collected evidence. Children are given the opportunity to experience Science in different contexts and visiting experts, dedicated Science weeks and outdoor learning is planned to enhance children’s conceptual understanding. Cross curricular links are made with other subjects wherever possible, particularly with Literacy, Numeracy, DT and ICT.  

Impact- This successfully approach at Shaw Hill Primary school results in a high quality, exciting and engaging Science curriculum that provides children with the foundations for understanding natural processes and skills for scientific enquiry. Children at Shaw Hill enjoy Science and are given the opportunities to feel that they are scientists and capable of achieving.
